IF Quake is only a Z-Machine (z5) file, which means it's extremely small to download (smaller than a lot of images you'll find on web sites). So here it is, in ZIP (primarily for Windows), SIT (primarily for Mac) and TAR (primarily for *nix) formats:
Note: Due to extreme Slashdotting, the files have been mirrored on FIleshack
Also Note: There are two known bugs in the game: in the Complex Corridor, there is a button that is not mentioned in the description. Push it to get by the acid. Also, don't kill the person in the Final Room!
But wait! You'll need a couple more things in order to actually do anything with this z5 file. First and foremost, you'll need a Z-Machine interpreter. Luckily, there are interpreters available for every conceivable platform, from Amiga to Windows. Here's a full list, although if you just want to know my preferred programs of choice, that'd be WinFrotz for Windows and Zoom for Mac OS X. I also like PalmPilot Frotz for IF on the go. Here are download links for all of them:
- WinFrotz (174k)
- Zoom (421k)
- PalmPilot Frotz (61k)
Lastly, you'll need at least one PAK file from id Software's Quake 1 (this will not work with Quake II or Quake III Arena!!!). If you don't own the game, you can grab the PC or Mac versions of the shareware version from FileShack:
If you're running on Linux or any other platform, just download the PC version. As long as you can extract from that ZIP file, you'll be okay.
Okay, once you've got all three components, here's how to run IF Quake:
- Extract/install Quake 1 shareware to some directory on your hard drive (it doesn't matter where, so long as you know where it goes).
- Drop the quake.z5 file into the ID1 directory, so that it's in the exact same folder as the PAK files Quake uses.
- Fire up your Z-Machine interpreter of choice, and use it to open the quake.z5 file, and you're off and running!
Once you're in the game, type HELP if you need more help.
IF Quake was written by jason bergman, and is in no way connected with id Software, Activision, Infocom, Atari, Ritual Entertainment, Intellivision, The Bit Boys (oy!), The Ramones, 3dfx, PalmOne, Sony, The Adventure Company, Apple, Microsoft, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Jim Henson or Playboy Enterprises. Just in case there was any doubt. Don't say we didn't make this abundantly clear.
