It's official: Dragon.ca Dead

Good Riddance! After searching around for the better part of a month to find out what happened to Dragon.ca (as detailed in this blog entry) I've finally come across solid proof that the company is no more.

I base this on a handful of stories I heard from other people who were left hanging by the company (some of whom have been screwed out of money -- I got lucky there) as well as the total unresponsiveness from their web site (which has officially shut down), and finally this forum post at Gone Gold, where a former supplier reports that Sanjay Mehta, the founder of the company, "took the money and ran."

As I said, I'm lucky in that I wasn't screwed out of money by this, but I know there are people who were. If you, or someone you know is out of money, do yourself a favor and contact your bank or credit card company now while you still stand a chance to get that back.

This sucks!

I ordered a few RPG games from them at these very low prices, they sent me an email that 2 of the games are out of stock and will be shipped as soon as they are 'back in stock'. When I received my other 3 games from them, I saw that they charged me for all 5 games, not only the first 3...I guess now I'll never get my other two games, it was not a big amount, less then 20 US$ 'extra', but still, I trusted this company fully for the last 5 years since I occasionally (every few months) bought games from them. I guess my trust in online shops diminished considerably :-(

Well, shoot.

I don't get it. I did lots of business with Dragon.Ca, got some pretty good deals, and took them up on their "lowest price guarantee" three times, and they always lowered their price and shipped the stuff pronto. Received the bills on official letterhead and everything. And, since I live in Canada and it was a Canadian store, I thought, "hey perfect!"

So, one day, POOF, the boss goes nutso, fires all the staff, writes up some phoney-baloney "fire sale" stuff, takes the money from a bunch of credit card orders, cleans out the warehouse and leaves?

It doesn't add up. They always seemed so dedicated to doing a good job, from what I saw. Why would they suddenly go out of business with such a sleazy bang??

CommanderBubba : Your experience with the company is very different from others that I've heard...over the years, lots of people were screwed out of money, and I've heard horrible things about their support staff.

i bought a couple games myself from dragon.ca and then i tryed to go back to their site and i came across this article. my best friend got screwed out of money but luckily i didnt

Posted by: mike at April 29, 2003 09:50 AM

I too got screwed by this company. I returned at game to them asking for a refund. They kindly replied via email telling me they received the return and would be happy to give me a refund. Well, this was at Christmas and NOTHING, no refund. After trying to get to them via their web site I finally figured out what was up with them by doing a google search and ending up here. I have neverhad trouble buying things on line, this is a frustrating experience and I am out $50.

Damn. I used to buy games from them once in a while. I can't believe they pulled this stunt.

Those are bad news..
I am from Israel, and I ordered from Dragon.ca many times, including a GameBoy Advance! Everything was delivered in less then a week, which is VERY fast in comparison to usuall shipping from the U.S area.
A shame such a good store turns bad.

I have been wondering what happened to dragon.ca for a while now. I had very good results from them over the past few years - good product and some of the best prices. Thanks for the info. It's too bad things didn't turn out better.

Posted by: James Tausch at May 8, 2003 10:07 AM

I got ripped for one game out of 2 I ordered. Is anyone hunting this guy down? I haven't seen any news story on this and there should be. A lot of people have been affected by this scam, and not even GameCenter (GameSpot) has posted anything relevant on Dragon.ca

Someone needs to find this guy.

Posted by: Hugo at May 16, 2003 01:24 PM

6th September 2001 I preordered Duke Nukem Forever. I guess I will never get this game. =(
Jeez the only thing I preorder over the Internet and I'm screwed. bleh X|

I still have the "Autoresponder" and "Shipping Department" email, I will try to contact my credit card bank to get my money back or something.

In the past years I've ordered a lot of games from Dragon.ca and always received them quickly.
I had a great experience with them and I'm sorry they are gone.

Anyway... now I understand the terrific rebates of the last months.

I was on the mailing list and always looked into buying something, but now I'm glad I didn't... Many people are saying that they want the company hunted down. Perhaps this information is a good place to start:

I don't know French, but it seems to be relatively good info. I might do something if I were bitter. Good luck to any and all who are.

I bought a lot of software of all varities from Dragon.CA at very attractive prices. I did not get burned, But I am sorry for those who did. Thank you for this Website! Now I know what happened to Dragon. CA, as I was wondering too!

I ordered from dragon.ca ater learning about it from the "Price Viewer" thing on gamespot. I only ordered a few times and i never had any problem with them. I was also close to pre-ordering Star Wars Galaxies with them. Very glad i didnt now. Pity to see this happen to a site i trusted.

If it's any help...here's the official address. I never had a problem with them, so I suppose I was lucky. If anyone contacts consumer affairs (or the Canadian equivelant) it would be nice to know how they handle it.

A shame that so many people had to be screwed by the pompous, harrassing owner. As a former employee, let me tell you how horrible an experience it was! Once I found out all of the illegal activities of Dragon's business, I tried to change things, both for the staff that was told on a daily basis how stupid they were and for the customers that were being screwed out of their $$. When it became apparent that I couldn't change the illegal operations, I did assist in getting some people's money back to them before I left.
Trust me, it was hell on earth to be employed there. The company moved to Orangeville in June '01 and operated out of a warehouse there. I have recently been told by sources that Sanjay Mehta is now operating an illegal DirecTV hu card operation in Canada out of his girlfriend's basement. Buyers beware. Not only is owning a DirecTV satellite system in Canada illegal, these hu cards screw legitimate DirecTV owners out of their signal.
When I can find out more detailed information about the sites (yes, there is more than one) he is operating, I will post them here. Stay posted...

I'm somewhat shocked to hear of dragon's demise. I didn't buy that much from them, but what I did was excellent value and fast delivery. I was able to buy Myst 3 Exile 3 months before it was on sale here in the UK. Hope the guy gets tracked down and made accountable, after betraying so much trust.

Posted by: rob at August 31, 2003 05:06 PM

I was about to buy, like 6 games from them when they shut down so I'm happey my pay check came in late, but I do see your guys point they screwed up bad. I trusted them sooooooooooooooo much and then they screw a whole bunch of ppl over. If they had just kept it up they would hold a solid market on games.

Posted by: Corwin at September 14, 2003 01:47 PM

I did several hundred dollars worth of business with these good folks over the years and I haven't got a single unkind word to say about them. They were fast and they were cheap, and in my experience had excellent customer service.

I'm sorry to see them go, and sad to hear that the owner pulled such a lame stunt on the way out.

Posted by: Diran at September 15, 2003 03:44 PM

Wow, I've bought stuff from dragon in the past as well. Never got screwed. But now that I think about it, some games I ordered last year at Christmas were "out of stock". I don't think I was charged for them but its been so long I've got to go re-check. Sorry I hear about those who did get screwed of money.

Posted by: Anna at October 16, 2003 12:21 PM

I can't believe these guys have vanished. I must have order about 12-15 titles from them and they always had the best price and speedy delivery. Let's not be consumed in their demise instead could someone point us all to an alternative click and mortar mechant like Dragon, now that would be useful information.

Posted by: Jay at October 18, 2003 09:14 PM

That's a good idea, especially because Dragon.ca used to: a) ship without the box (and save 15-20 $ only for that) and b) had extremely low shipping rates (it didn't use UPS or similar, but plain mail service). I live in Italy and shipping from US via UPS takes something like 30-40 $, a little too much. If someone knows another international online store like Dragon.ca used to be, is *really* welcome.

Posted by: Paul at November 26, 2003 05:48 AM

Like many others, I had a fairly good experince with dragon. Sorry to hear so many people got screwed. Anyone knows of a good net store, please post it here.

Posted by: Jim at January 29, 2004 03:01 PM

Wow... I'm suprised to hear this... I bought several games from Dragon including European Air War which I got for no less than 50% less than ANY other store! What a shame the owner turned out to be a thief!

Luckily I was never ripped off, I'm sorry for those that were... hope the owner gets tracked down.

Kudos to whoever set up this site... I had no idea what happened to them.

Posted by: Leighton at March 27, 2004 05:29 PM

I was just wondering what happened to them today as I was looking at my GoGamer weekend special. I was lamenting all of the good prices I had got from dragon.ca. I hadn't even known they had gone out of business or noticed that they had stopped sending me bulletins. What a shame!

So, where's the best place to buy cheap games now?
